Tekken will be going free to play in the recently annouced Tekken Revolution. The new fighting game will be a PS3 exclusive and comes out June 11. The game was recently annouced via a Gamespot E3 Preview Show (skip to 19:30 for the trailer). The trailer is 20 seconds and quickly shows off Kazuya, Lars, Bryan and Paul. The idea of a free to play fighting game isn’t new. Tecmo recently annouced Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Core Fighters as a free to play alternate to a full version of DOA5 Ult. The free variant comes with 4 fighters Ryu Hayabusa, Hayate, Kasumi, and Ayane with the rest of the normal cast costing $4 a piece. Story mode costs $15. Multiplayer is also free with both Core Fighters and normal retail able to play against one another.
I’m very interested in what the pricing structure will be for Tekken Revolution. Many commentators have brought up them going the way of wildly sucessfull League of Legends, charaging for bother characters and outfits. Namco Bandai could also go the way of Valves DOTA2 with every character unlocked and selling costumes and other vanity items that do not effect gameplay. Paying $3 for a fighter wouldn’t be the worst thing but with how the comeptivitve scene works it wouldn’t be the freiendliest.
